Partido importante el que afrontaba el Barça ante el líder hasta la jornada, el Valencia que todavía no había perdido ningún partido viajaba al Camp Nou a intentar seguir con la racha de victorias, y el Barça buscaba igualar a puntos al Valencia y apretar la Liga por arriba.
Para ello Guardiola alineó al equipo de gala, sin reservar jugadores para la Champions, incluso sacando a Xavi que decidió jugar para ayudar a conseguir la victoria, así pues el equipo titular fue: Valdés; Alves, Piqué, Puyol, Maxwell; Xavi, Busquets, Keita; Messi, Villa e Iniesta.
La primera parte comenzaba como no lo habíamos visto en toda la temporada, con el Valencia arrinconando al Barça en su área, con diversas oportunidades y poniendo peligro a Valdés, el Barça se veía en una situación atípica al ver que tenía que defender en su propio estadio ante un Valencia muy ambicioso que venía a por los 3 puntos. Cuando el Barça lo intentaba el Valencia hacía muy bien el fuera de juego, dejando a Villa en posición antirreglamentaria y no dejándole anotar ante su equipo anterior, del que guarda muy buenos recuerdos. El Valencia controlaba el partido en todos los aspectos, incluso la posesión del balón era superior para ellos, cosa inédita en las últimas temporadas, el Barça jugaba a ritmo de los de Emery y las oportunidades mas claras eran para los valencianistas. Tanto era el dominio que en el minuto 38 Pablo Hernández conseguía superar a Valdés pese a tocar el balón pero no poder desviarlo hacia el lado izquierdo de su portería. Pocos minutos después pudo llegar otro gol para Pablo Hernández, pero Valdés despejó muy bien, Messi tuvo la suya en el final de la primera parte, pero la suerte no acompañó al argentino. Y así acabó la primera parte, con el peor Barça de la temporada y un muy buen Valencia dominando claramente ante los de Guardiola.
El descanso parece que dio muy buen resultado, y la charla de Guardiola pareció dar muy buen resultado, el Barça salió a por el partido y así lo demostró Iniesta, que tras una gran pared con Xavi consigue superar a Cesar Sánchez tras quedarse solo con la pared y con un buen tiro ajustado al palo, gran Iniesta que dedica el gol a su futuro hijo/a. El Barça había hecho en dos minutos más que en toda la primera parte, ya que las oportunidades no dejaban respirar a la defensa valencianista. Este Barça si que era el Barça que estábamos acostumbrados, toque y toque de los de Guardiola el desarrollado y fútbol de ataque con la recuperación de la posesión del esférico. Las oportunidades seguían llegando, Villa tuvo una ocasión buenísima de adelantar al Barcelona tras un buen pase de Álves, pero César realizó un paradón al detener el cabezazo del Villa. El Valencia se cerró atrás para aguantar por lo menos el empate, pero no lo pudieron aguantar mucho tiempo, ya que tras un gran centro de Xavi después de un córner, Puyol que estaba en el área consiguió rematar un el gran centro con un espectacular cabezazo hacia la escuadra de la portería de Cesar. El partido era totalmente distinto del de la primera parte, mostrando la mejor cara del Barça. Guardiola empezó a pensar en la Champions y retiró a Xavi por Mascherano, a Villa por Pedro, que reapareció después de su lesión y a Keita, que parecía tocado por Abidal. La polémica del partido llegó en el minuto 90 cuando Aduriz hace una fuerte entrada por detrás a Mascherano, sin el balón en el pie del argentino, pero la bronca que se montó en el centro del campo acabó con amarilla para Valdés y solo amarilla para el delantero valencianista. Un minuto después Messi tuvo oportunidad de superar a Cesar pero vio bien la intención del crack azulgrana.
Así acabó el partido, con victoria ante un Valencia que realizó muy buena primera parte pero no pudo soportar el recital blaugrana de la segunda parte, con esta victoria igualamos al Valencia en la clasificación y seguimos a 1 solo punto del Real Madrid. Pablo Hernández el mejor por los valencianistas, y Iniesta el mejor el en Barça, con unos discretos Villa y Messi, que no tuvieron acierto en el partido.
